Malayalam Grammar - Pronouns

Hi Malayalam learners! ๐Ÿ˜Š
In this lesson, we will be discussing pronouns in Malayalam. Pronouns are words that replace nouns within a sentence. For example, instead of saying "John went to the store to buy John's groceries," we can say "John went to the store to buy his groceries." By using the pronoun "his," we avoid repeating the noun "John" twice.

Personal Pronouns[edit | edit source]

Personal pronouns are used to refer to persons or things.

In Malayalam, there are five kinds of personal pronouns. Here are the pronouns for the first and second persons.

Malayalam Pronunciation English
เดžเดพเดจเตโ€ nyฤn I/me
เดจเต€ nฤซ You
เด…เดตเดจเตโ€ avan He/him
เด…เดตเดณเตโ€ aval She/her
เด…เดตเดฐเตโ€ avar They/them

Below is a dialogue with personal pronouns.

  • Person 1: เดžเดพเดจเตโ€ เดŽเดจเตเดฑเต† เดชเต‡เดฐเต เดธเดจเตเดคเต‹เดทเต. (I am Santosh.)
  • Person 2: เดจเต€ เด…เดจเตเดคเต‹เดฃเดฟเดฏเต† เด…เดฑเดฟเดฏเตเดจเตเดจเตเดฃเตเดŸเต‹? (Do you know Antony?)
  • Person 1: เด…เดตเดจเตโ€ เดŽเดจเตเดฑเต† เดธเดนเต‹เดฆเดฐเดจเดพเดฃเต. (He is my brother.)
  • Person 2: เด…เดตเดจเตโ€ เดŽเดตเดฟเดŸเต†เดฏเดพเดฃเต? (Where is he?)
  • Person 1: เด…เดตเดจเตโ€ เดตเต€เดŸเตเดŸเดฟเดฒเดพเดฃเต. (He is at home.)

Demonstrative Pronouns[edit | edit source]

Demonstrative pronouns are used to identify or point to things. In Malayalam, there are two types of demonstrative pronouns: เด‡เดคเต (ithu) means "this" while เด…เดคเต (athu) means "that."

Malayalam Pronunciation English
เด‡เดคเต ithu This
เด…เดคเต athu That

Here's an example dialogue using demonstrative pronouns.

  • Person 1: เด‡เดคเต เดชเตเดธเตเดคเด•เด‚ เด†เดฃเต. (This is a book.)
  • Person 2: เด…เดคเต เดชเตเดธเตเดคเด•เด‚ เด…เดฒเตเดฒ. เด…เดคเต เดชเตเดธเตเดคเด•เดถเดพเดฒเดฏเดฟเดฒเดพเดฃเต. (That's not a book. That's a library.)

Interrogative Pronouns[edit | edit source]

Interrogative pronouns are used to ask questions. In Malayalam, the most common interrogative pronouns are เด†เดฐเตโ€ (ฤr) for people and เดŽเดจเตเดคเต (enthu) for things.

Malayalam Pronunciation English
เด†เดฐเตโ€ ฤr Who
เดŽเดจเตเดคเต enthu What

Examples:

  • เด†เดฐเดพเดฃเต เดจเดฟเด™เตเด™เดณเตโ€? (Who are you?)
  • เดŽเดจเตเดคเต เดตเต†เดณเตเดณเด‚ เด†เดฃเต? (What is water?)

Relative Pronouns[edit | edit source]

Relative Pronouns are used to connect relative clauses to the main clause. A relative clause is a part of a sentence that adds extra information to a noun. In Malayalam, the most common relative pronoun is "เดฏเดพเดคเต†เดพเดฐเต" (yฤthoru) which means "who/whose/which."

Malayalam Pronunciation English
เดฏเดพเดคเต†เดพเดฐเต yฤthoru Who/Whose/Which

Here's an example:

(Today, fireworks were exploded in any form to organise my child's examination, which was a surprising thing.)

Reflexive Pronouns[edit | edit source]

Reflexive pronouns are used when the object of the sentence is the same as the subject. In Malayalam, there is only one reflexive pronoun: เดคเดจเตเดจเต† (thanne).

Malayalam Pronunciation English
เดคเดจเตเดจเต† thanne Himself/herself/itself/themselves

Examples:

  • เดœเต‚เตบ เดคเดจเตเดจเต† เดชเด เดฟเด•เตเด•เตเดจเตเดจเต. (John himself is studying.)
  • เดฎเดฒเดฏเดพเดณเดฟเด•เตพ เดคเดจเตเดจเต† เดŽเดฒเตเดฒเดพเดตเดฐเตเด‚ เดชเดฐเต€เด•เตเดทเด•เตเด•เดพเดฏเต เดธเด‚เด˜เดŸเดฟเดชเตเดชเดฟเดšเตเดšเต. (The Malayalis themselves organised the event for the exam.)
