Amharic is the official language of Ethiopia, spoken by approximately 22 million people. One of the key aspects of any language is its vocabulary for measuring time, and in Amharic, the months of the year are an important component of this.
The Ethiopian calendar is based on the ancient Coptic calendar, which is widely used in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.
Ethiopians follow the Julian Calendar, which consists of 12 months of 30 days each and a 13th month of five days (six days in a leap year)*.
The calendar is seven years and eight months behind the Western (Gregorian) calendar.
