Welcome to the lesson on Standard Arabic question words! In this lesson, we will introduce the different question words in Arabic and their usage.

Heading level 2: What are question words?[編集 | ソースを編集]

Question words are words that indicate a question is being asked. In Arabic, there are several question words that are used to ask different types of questions.

Heading level 3: Interrogative Pronouns[編集 | ソースを編集]

Interrogative pronouns are used to ask questions about people or things. In Arabic, there are three interrogative pronouns:

من (man) /man/ 誰 (dare)
ماذا (mādhā) /maːðaː/ 何 (nani)
ما (mā) /maː/ どの (dono)
  • من (man) is used to ask about a person
  • ماذا (mādhā) is used to ask about a thing or an action
  • ما (mā) is used to ask about a quality or a characteristic.

Heading level 3: Interrogative Particles[編集 | ソースを編集]

Interrogative particles are used to ask yes/no questions. In Arabic, there are two interrogative particles:

هل (hal) /hal/ ~か (ka)
أ (a) /ʔa/ ~ですか (desu ka)
  • هل (hal) is used in formal Arabic to ask yes/no questions
  • أ (a) is used in colloquial Arabic to ask yes/no questions.

Now that you know the different question words in Arabic, let's see how to use them in sentences.

  • To ask a question in Arabic, you usually start with the question word, followed by the rest of the sentence.
  • In Arabic, the verb usually comes before the subject.

Here are some examples:

  • من هذا؟ (man hadha?) - Who is this?
  • ماذا تفعل؟ (mādhā tafʻal?) - What are you doing?
  • ما اللون الذي تفضله؟ (ma al-lawn alladhi tafḍaluhu?) - What color do you prefer?
  • هل أنت طالب؟ (hal anta ṭālib?) - Are you a student?
  • أين المطار؟ (ʾayna al-maṭār?) - Where is the airport?
