Common Prepositions in Egyptian Arabic[edit | edit source]
Here is a list of common prepositions in Egyptian Arabic with their English translations:
- fi (في) - in
- 'ala (على) - on
- 'an (عن) - about
- ba'd (بعد) - after
- min (من) - from
- 'il (عل) - to
- le (ل) - for
- ma' (مع) - with
Usage of Prepositions in Sentences[edit | edit source]
Here is how these prepositions can be used in different sentences:
- Fi (في): Example 1: Ana fi Masr. (أنا في مصر) - I am in Egypt. Example 2: Hona fi kursi. (هونا في كرسي) - He is in a chair.
- 'Ala (على): Example 1: Hona 'ala makan. (هونا على مكان) - He is on the table. Example 2: Ana 'ala ma'lum. (أنا على معلوم) - I am on the topic.
- 'An (عن): Example 1: Ana ba'ol 'an el-kitab. (أنا باعول عن الكتاب) - I am talking about the book. Example 2: Hona be'ol 'an el-madares. (هونا باعول عن المدرسة) - He is talking about the school.
- Ba'd (بعد): Example 1: Ana ba'd khamsin 'ashar. (أنا بعد خمس عشر) - I am after fifteen. Example 2: Hona ba'd el-matar. (هونا بعد المطار) - He is after the airport.
- Min (من): Example 1: Ana min Masr. (أنا من مصر) - I am from Egypt. Example 2: Hona min el-madares. (هونا من المدرسة) - He is from the school.
- 'Il (عل): Example 1: Ana 'il kursi. (أنا على كرسي) - I am going to the chair. Example 2: Hona 'il el-madares. (هونا على المدرسة) - He is going to the school.
- Le (ل): Example 1: Ana lek el-kitab. (أنا ل-ك الكتاب) - I have the book for you. Example 2: Hona le el-madares. (هونا للمدرسة) - He is for the school.
- Ma' (مع): Example 1: Ana ma' Hoda. (أنا مع هدى) - I am with Hoda. Example 2: Hona ma' el-madares. (هونا مع المدرسة) - He is with the school. Exercise: Try to write a sentence using each of the prepositions we have learned in this lesson.
