Giving Opinions in Marathi[edit | edit source]

Expressing your opinion is simple in Marathi. The most common phrase used to give your opinion is - 'माझं मत आहे' (mājha maṭ āhē) which means 'I have an opinion.'

Here are a few more phrases that you can use while giving your opinion:

Marathi Pronunciation English
मला वाटतंय ( malā vāṭtaṇy) ma-la wa-ta-tan-ye I think...
मला लक्षात आलं आहे (malā lakṣāta ālaṁ āhē) ma-la lak-sha-ta aal-aam aa-he I noticed that...
माझं अनुभव आहे (mājha anubhav āhē) maa-jha a-nu-bhav aa-he I have experienced...
वाटतंय कीमान नक्की आहे (vāṭtaṇy kīmān nak-kī āhē) wa-ta-tan-ye kee-man nak-kee aa-he I am almost certain that...
माझं बोलावंड आहे की... (mājha bolāvaṇḍa āhē kī...) ma-jha bo-la-va-nd aa-he kee For me, the thing is...

Example Dialogue[edit | edit source]

  • Person 1: मला वाटतंय या रेस्टॉरंटमध्ये फूड सुंदर आहे. (malā vāṭtaṇy yā restōraṇṭamadhya phūḍ sundar āhē) (I think the food in this restaurant is delicious.)
  • Person 2: माझं अनुभव आहे की येथे नंतर झोंका आहेत. (mājha anubhav āhē kī ye-the nan-tar jhon-ka ā-hēt) (I have experienced that the aftertaste is not good here.)

Agreeing and Disagreeing[edit | edit source]

To agree with someone, you can use the phrase 'हो, मलाही ते मत आवडतंय' (hō, malāhī tē maṭ āvaḍtaṇy) which means 'Yes, I also like that opinion.'

And to disagree, use the phrase 'नाही, मला ते मत आवडत नाही' (nāhī, malā tē maṭ āvaḍta nāhī) which means 'No, I don't like that opinion.'

Here are a few more examples of agreeing and disagreeing:

Marathi Pronunciation English
अबसूतलं खरं आहे. मलाही ते आवडतंय (abasūtaln khar āhē. malāhī tē āvaḍtaṇy) ab-soo-taln khar aa-hē. ma-la-hī te aa-va-dtan-y It's absolutely true. I also like that opinion.
मला ते मत आवडत नाही. माझं प्रतिक्रिया सामान्यतः विरुद्ध आहे (malā tē maṭ āvaḍta nāhī. mājha prati-kriyā sāmānyatā viruddha āhē) ma-la te aa-va-dtan-y nāhī. maa-jha pree-ti-kree-yaa saa-maa-nya-taa vi-ru-ddha aa-hē I don't like that opinion. My reaction is usually opposite.

Example Dialogue[edit | edit source]

  • Person 1: माझं मत आहे की महाराष्ट्रातील सर्वात चांगले झोपडं अहंकारणगड, रायगड आणि सिंहगड यांच्यावर आहेत. (mājha maṭ āhē kī mahārāṣṭrātīl sarvāt chānglē jhōpaḍaṁ ahaṅkāraṇgaḍ, rāya-gaḍ āṇi siṁhagaḍ yāñchyāvar āhēt) (In my opinion, the best Forts in Maharashtra are Ahankaranagad, Raigad, and Sinhgad.)
  • Person 2: हो, मलाही त्या झोपडांबद्दल मत आवडतंय. (hō, malāhī tyā jhōpaḍāmbaddal maṭ āvaḍtaṇy) (Yes, I also like that opinion about those forts.)

Softening Your Opinion[edit | edit source]

Sometimes in conversations, you need to soften your opinion, especially when discussing sensitive or controversial topics such as politics or religion. Here are some phrases that you can use in such situations:

Marathi Pronunciation English
माझं ऍग्रिमेंट तेवढं तर नाही, पण...(mājha agrimēnṭ tēvaḍhaṁ tara nāhī, paṇ...) ma-jha a-gree-maynt tevadh tar na-hi, pun I don't necessarily agree, but...
असं मलाही वाटतंय, आणलं मग तुम्हाला ठरवून द्यायला योग्य आहे (asang malāhī vāṭtaṇy āṇlaṁ mag tumbhālā ṭhara-vūn dyāy-lā yōgy āhē) a-sang ma-la-hi va-ta-tan-y, aa-nla mag tumbhā-lā tha-ra-vun dya-ya-laa yog-y aa-he I also feel the same way, but maybe it's appropriate to explain it to you...

मलाही काहीतरी माहिती आहे. वाटतंय, त्यामुळे... (malāhī kāhītarī māhitī āhē. vāṭtaṇy, tyā-muḷē...) ma-la-hī kaa-hi-ta-ri ma-hi-ti aa-he. wa-ta-tan-y, tya-mu-le I also have some information. I think, because of that...

Example Dialogue[edit | edit source]

  • Person 1: दक्षिण महाराष्ट्र मध्ये कोणतं ठिकाण बदलून आवडेल का? (dakṣiṇ mahārāṣṭra madhyē kōna-tan ṭhikāṇ badalūn āvaḍēl kā?) (Will changing the place in South Maharashtra be good?)
  • Person 2: माझं ऍग्रिमेंट तेवढं तर नाही, पण मी ही उपयुक्त मानतोय. (mājha agrimēnṭ tēvaḍhaṁ tara nāhī, paṇ mī hī upayukta mānatōy) (I don't necessarily agree, but I consider it appropriate.)
