With the completion of this lesson, consider investigating these related pages: Food & Time and Scheduling.

Basic health-related vocabulary[edit | edit source]

Let's begin with some basic health-related vocabulary:

Lithuanian Pronunciation English

ligos 'lɪgo:s illness/disease
apsinuodijimas apsiː'nʊɔdɪjimas poisoning
galvos skausmas 'gɐlvɔs skaʊsmas headache
kosulys 'kɔsʊlɪs cough
gripas 'grɪpas flu

Let's try to use this vocabulary in a conversation:

  • Person 1: Man baisiai skauda galvą. ('mah-n(gh) bai-si-ai ska-u-da 'ga-lvɑ) (I have a really bad headache.)
  • Person 2: Tu turėtum išgerti vaistų nuo galvos skausmo. ('tu tu-'re:-tu:m iʃ-'gɛr-ti: 'vaɪs-tʊ:nwɔ 'ga-lvɔs 'skaʊs-mɔ) (You should take medicine for your headache.)

Common illnesses in Lithuania[edit | edit source]

In Lithuania, some of the most common illnesses are:

Lithuanian Pronunciation English
dantų skausmas 'dantʊ skaʊsmas toothache
angina aŋ'ɡi:na tonsillitis
bronchitas 'brɔnxitɐs bronchitis
širdies susirgimai 'ʃɪrdʲɪɛs 'susɪrɡɪmaɪ heart disease

It is worth noting that like many other countries, the prevalence of some illnesses differs from region to region in Lithuania. For example, in some areas, there are higher rates of tuberculosis and Lyme disease.

Let's see these illnesses in context:

  • Person 1: Ar turi vaistų nuo tonzilito? ('ɐr 'tu:rɪ 'vaɪs-tʊ:nwɔ tɔnsɪ'lʲi:tɔ) (Do you have medicine for tonsillitis?)
  • Person 2: Taip, čia yra vaistų nuo anginos ir tonzilito. ('taɪp, tʃɪjɐ 'irɐ 'vaɪs-tʊ:nwɔ 'aŋɡɪnɔs ɪr tɔnsɪ'lʲi:tɔ) (Yes, here is medicine for tonsillitis and angina. )

Traditional medicine in Lithuania[edit | edit source]

Traditional medicine has a long history in Lithuania, with roots in pagan beliefs and folk remedies. Some ancient Lithuanian folk remedies are still used today, including herb tea, honey with propolis, and birch tree juice.

At the same time, modern medicine is widely available, and most people choose to visit doctors and hospitals for medical care.

Let's see an example of a conversation about traditional medicine:

  • Person 1: Turiu gerų liaudies vaistų nuo kosulio. ('tu:rɪʊ 'gʲeru:lʲ 'lʲau:dʲɪɛs vaɪs-tʊ:nwɔ kɔsʊlɪɔ) (I have good folk medicine for cough.)
  • Person 2: Ačiū, bet vaikštau pas gydytoją. ('aʨiʊ, bʲet 'vaɪkʃtaʊ pas gɪdʊtɔja) (Thank you, but I'm going to the doctor.)

Cultural beliefs about health[edit | edit source]

In Lithuanian culture, people tend to take their health seriously. Health education is emphasized in schools, and many health-related campaigns and events are organized every year.

One aspect of health in Lithuania that may be unique is the belief that saunas have healing properties. Lithuanians go to the sauna for physical and mental relaxation, and also to get rid of illnesses.

Let's see how this cultural belief can be mentioned in a conversation:

  • Person 1: Ar jau buvai lietuvioje? ('ɐr jɐʊ 'bu:vɐɪ 'lʲɛtʊvʲɔjɛ) (Have you been to Lithuania?)
  • Person 2: Taip, mėgaujuosi lietuviška kultūra, man labai patinka pirtis. ('taɪp, me:gau-'ju:wɔsɪ lʲɛ-tʊ-'vɪʃka:kʊl'tʃʊ:ra, man la-'baj pa-'tiŋka 'pirtɪs) (Yes, I enjoy Lithuanian culture, I really like sauna.)
