Indonesian Vocabulary - Geography

Hi Indonesian learners! 😊

In this lesson, we will learn about the geography of Indonesia. Indonesia is located in Southeast Asia and is made up of thousands of islands with diverse natural features. Let's explore some Indonesian vocabulary related to geography. Regions and places[edit | edit source]

Indonesia has five main islands, known as "pulau besar," which means "big islands." The names of these islands are:

Jawa /dʒawa/ Java
Kalimantan /kalimantan/ Borneo
Sumatera /sumatera/ Sumatra
Sulawesi /sulawesi/ Sulawesi
Papua /papua/ Papua

There are also many other smaller islands that make up Indonesia. Here are some interesting geographical places that you can find in Indonesia:

  • Person 1: Apakah kamu pernah ke danau Toba? (Have you ever been to Lake Toba?)
  • Person 2: Belum, ingin sekali ke sana. Katanya itu danau terbesar di Indonesia. (Not yet, I really want to go there. They say it's the biggest lake in Indonesia.)

Natural disasters[edit | edit source]

Indonesia is prone to natural disasters due to its location on the Ring of Fire, an area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean where many earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur. Here are some Indonesian vocabulary related to natural disasters:

gempa bumi /ɡəmpa bumi/ earthquake
erupsi gunung berapi /ɛrupsɪ ɡunuŋ bɛrapi/ volcanic eruption
tsunami /tsunami/ tsunami
banjir /bandʒir/ flood

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: Kemarin ada gempa bumi di sini. Apakah kamu merasakan getarannya? (There was an earthquake here yesterday. Did you feel the tremors?)
  • Person 2: Tidak, saya tidak merasakannya. Tapi saya lihat berita tentang itu di televisi. Gempa itu cukup mengagetkan warga sekitar. (No, I didn't feel it. But I saw the news about it on TV. The earthquake was quite surprising for the local residents.)

Indonesia has many beautiful and exotic national parks that are worth visiting. Here are some of the most famous Indonesian national parks:

  • Person 2: Sudah. Itu tempat yang sangat indah. Pemandangan dari puncak gunung sangat spektakuler. (Yes, I have. It's a very beautiful place. The view from the top of the mountain is very spectacular.)
