Cebuano Vocabulary - Education

Hi Cebuano learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will focus on Cebuano vocabulary related to education. As a Cebuano language teacher with 20 years of experience, I will share cultural information and interesting facts to illustrate the lesson. Don't forget to check out the Find native speakers and ask them any questions about today's topic!

Learning Institutions[edit | edit source]

In Cebuano, a school is called "eskuwela" and a university is "unibersidad." Here are some examples in context:

  • Person 1: Naa ka sa eskwela karon? (Are you at school now?)
  • Person 2: Oo, nagtunon ko sa unibersidad sa Sugbo. (Yes, I'm studying at the university in Cebu.)

Here are other useful words related to learning institutions:

estudyante /estu'jante/ student

leksyon /lek'syɔn/ lesson

Academic Subjects[edit | edit source]

To ask about academic subjects, we use the question word "Unsa" which means "what." Here are some examples:

  • Person 1: Unsa man ang imong paboritong subyek? (What is your favorite subject?)
  • Person 2: Akong paboritong subyek mao ang seyensya. (My favorite subject is science.)

Here are some academic subjects in Cebuano and their translations:

literatura /literatu'ra/ literature

Educational Degrees[edit | edit source]

To ask about educational degrees, we use the question word "Unsaon" which means "how." Here are some examples:

  • Person 1: Unsaon pagbalhin sa kolehiyo? (How do you transfer to college?)
  • Person 2: Kinahanglan nga maka-score og dili mubalik-balik sa eksamen. (You need to get good grades and not have to take the exam repeatedly.)

Here are some educational degrees in Cebuano and their translations:

Cebuano Pronunciation English
diploma /di'ploma/ diploma
lisensyado /li'sensya-do/ licensed or licensed professional
bakaloryo /bakalo'ryo/ bachelor's degree

Educational Tools[edit | edit source]

In Cebuano, we have different tools that we use for education. Here are some examples:

Cebuano Pronunciation English
pluma /'pluma/ pen
kutsilyo /kutsi'lyo/ scissors
papel /pa'pel/ paper
libro /'libro/ book
kompyuter /kompyu'ter/ computer

To form simple sentences in Cebuano, we use the subject-verb-object (SVO) structure. Here is an example dialogue for educational tools:

  • Person 1: Gipagsulat nako ang akong pangalan sa papel. (I wrote my name on the paper.)
  • Person 2: Nakasulat na sad ko gamit ang pluma. (I also wrote using the pen.)
